The NMR T/sub 1p/ technique is developed to determine the average residence time, t''/sub e/, of a proton on a water molecule in liquid water. The temperature and density dependence of t''/sub e/ is measured in the range 0 to 100/sup 0/C and at densities up to 1.125 g cm/sup -3/ (pressure range, 1 bar to 5.6 kbar). The T/sub 1p/ technique is compared to other NMR methods such as the T/sub 1/ and T/sub 2/ techniques also used to determine t''/sub e/. The anomalous behavior of t''/sub e/ with compression at temperatures below 40/sup 0/C parallels changes in other physical properties of liquid water.
