The anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate is effective in flushing the model compounds naphthalene and biphenyl and the priority pollutant Aroclor 1254 (a PCB mixture) from clays in laboratory columns. A continuous-flow countercurrent extraction technique permits efficient recovery of the surfactant solution for reuse; hexane is the organic extracting solvent. Emulsion formation is avoided by the use of large droplets of hexane in the column.
