Small-angle elastic and inelastic electron-sodium scattering

Small angle elastic scattering of 10 ev electrons and forward inelastic scattering of 6.0-25.0 ev electrons by sodium were investigated. These are the first measurements taken using a high resolution crossed-beams apparatus recently designed and built at the New York University Atomic Beams Laboratory, and described in detail in this thesis. This apparatus employs the recoil technique, in which observation of the scattering is made on the recoiled atom, rather than on the scattered electron. Unlike other scattering techniques, this allows one to obtain absolute cross-section measurements which do not require any normalization. The results represent the absolute determination of an effective cross-section, ..delta..sigma = integralsigma(theta)T(theta,phi)d..cap omega.., where T(theta,phi) is the instrument function which includes angular and energy resolution of the electron and atom beams and the beam overlap geometry. One can also define an effective collection solid angle, ..delta cap omega.. = integralT(theta,phi)d..cap omega...
