This article describes the structure at a three-unit nuclear site that will accommodate five year`s worth of low-level radioactive waste generated by the utility while it awaits creation of a regional storage center. On Jan 1, 1993, the Beatty (Nev) and Richland (Wash) facilities used for burial of low-level radioactive nuclear waste (LLW) closed their doors to radwaste generators located outside the associated state-compact regions. In addition, the Barnwell (SC) storage facility was scheduled to close for radwaste generators outside the Southeast Compact on June 30, 1994. To ensure the availability of economical storage space for radwaste from Salem and Hope Creek stations over the following five years, Public Service Electric and Gas Co (PSE and G) decided in 1992 to build its own facility. As the basis for its plan, the utility selected the steel-frame, metal-sided building design developed by Sargent and Lundy, Chicago, Ill, one of several generic designs developed under EPRI Project 3800. PSE and G selected the S and L option because it offers the most cost-effective approach. The utility`s three nuclear units, Salem-1 and -2 and Hope Creek-1, are adjacent and situated on the Delaware River. The storage facility was sized to accommodate LLW generated by those units over a period of five years. It was constructed within a common protected area at the site comprising both plants. The facility is a stand-alone structure enclosing a concrete storage vault. It was modified from the reference design by S and L to meet unique PSE and G needs and local licensing requirements, and to incorporate several innovative improvements.
