A method is proposed for analyzing low-frequency electric fields in plasmas which is based on finding the centroid of the Stark-broadened hydrogen spectral line at half maximum. The method can be used to find the charged particle density in a nonturbulent plasma and to calculate the magnitude and direction of the low-frequency field in a turbulent plasma. Analysis of the H/sub ..beta../ line profiles in a z-pinch indicates that the turbulent low-frequency field is directed primarily along the z axis, and its average magnitude is roughly-equal6.5 kV/cm.
