Off-mass-shell behavior of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude and absorption of slow pions by nuclei

An estimate of the pion-nucleon ..sigma.. term, obtained with a field-theory model of ..pi..N scattering amplitude, is discussed. The calculation of the imaginary part of the pion-deuteron scattering amplitude is carried out with the off-mass-shell behavior of the amplitude and of the pion-absorption operator taken into account. The cross section for production of pions in nucleon-nucleon collisions near threshold is calculated.
