In integrated two-stage coal liquefaction (ITSL) processes, the hydroprocessing reactor is responsible for upgrading the primary liquefaction products and providing a high quality solvent for coal dissolution. As a result, catalyst activity, selectivity, and longevity can have a profound impact on the operation and economics of the process. To assess catalyst performance in ITSL processes, catalyst samples were periodically collected throughout runs at the Wilsonville coal liquefaction pilot plant. The spent and subsequently regenerated catalyst samples were characterized by various analytical techniques and subjected to batch activity studies. The results from these investigations and comparison between runs are presented. 5 refs., 10 figs., 12 tabs.
