Title: Reviews of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Working Group reports

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5543931

In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program an the World Meteorological Organization. A task of IPCC, to be carried out by three Working Groups, was to study various aspects of possible climate change resulting from atmospheric buildup of so- called greenhouse gases'' and to prepare reports for consideration at the Second World Climate Conference in Geneva, October 29-- November 7, 1990. The three reports are: group 1 - Scientific Assessment of Climate Change''; group 2 - Potential Impacts of Climate Change''; and group 3 - Formulation of Response Strategies. '' Electric utility activities may be affected by international protocols and greenhouse gas emissions. In order to be involved in the decision-making process, utility managers need to have a thorough understanding of what is known about climate change and the greenhouse effect -- including particularly the many remaining gaps in scientific data and the limitations of current modeling techniques. This review provides a critique of how these issues are treated in the three IPCC documents, which are now in use as a basis for policy making. The IPCC documents are scheduled for revision prior to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Economic Development, in June 1992. 37 refs., 1 fig., 2 tabs.
