Area two-dimensional converging/diverging nozzle

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5543385
A two-dimensional variable area exhaust nozzle assembly is described for a gas turbine engine, the engine having an axis and comprising: exhaust duct means having opposed, fixed, side walls; variable position exhaust nozzle means disposed within the exhaust duct means, the nozzle means including upper flap means and lower flap means opposed to the upper flap means, the upper and lower flap means and the side walls together defining a converging/diverging exhaust nozzle gas flow path, the nozzle means having a forward end and rearward end, the forward end being upstream of the rearward end; the upper flap means comprising a movable upstream flap having a forward edge and rearward edge and a movable downstream flap having a forward edge and rearward edge, the forward edge of the downstream flap being hinged along a first axis to the rearward edge of the upstream flap for rotation of the downstream flap about the first axis; first actuation means associated with the upper flap means for moving and guiding the upper flap means to vary the throat area of the nozzle means; second actuation means connected to the lower flap means for moving the lower flap means between first and second positions to vary the throat area of the nozzle means.
