Gasifying brown coal in Czechoslovakia: an update

Journal Article · · World Coal; (United States)
OSTI ID:5542652
Coal gasification in Czechoslovakia is accomplished in a fixed bed of a pressure gasifier with an oxygen-steam mixture, which is injected into the bottom section of the reactor. The crude gas contains hydrogen (41 percent by volume), methane (10.4 percent by volume), carbon monoxide (13 percent by volume), and carbon dioxide (33 percent by volume). The remaining portion of the gas contains nitrogen, oxygen, and other substances. The crude gas is purified and treated to produce hydrogen, carbon dioxide, benzol, and town gas. Town gas is used as home and industrial fuel. Brown coal is the feedstock for these plants. The three plants consume approximately 5,000,000 metric tons (5,500,000 short tons) of coal per year. The gasifiers are described briefly; treatment of the phenol-containing waste water is outlined.
