The Letter by Knauss et al. (1990) by the above title describes a method for defining pH and then measuring it using cells without liquid junction. The purpose here is threefold: (1) to point out a critical inconsistency in the definition of activity coefficients of ions in their paper, (2) to recommend a better and unambiguous definition of pH and a procedure for its measurement using cells of the types described by the authors, and (3) to describe alternative and convenient methods for using cells with liquid junction to accurately measure acidity in brines.
