Quenching of electronically excited barium atoms, Ba(5d /sup 3/D/sub J/)

The lowest optically metastable excited state of barium, Ba(5d /sup 3/D/sub J/), was populated by laser excitation of the 6p /sup 1/P/sup 0//sub 1/reverse arrow6s /sup 1/S/sub 0/ (lambda=553.5 nm) transition followed by the spontaneous emission 6p /sup 1/P/sup 0//sub 1/..-->..5d /sup 3/D/sub J/ (lambdaapprox.1130 nm). No evidence for the normally spin allowed transition 6p /sup 1/P/sup 0//sub 1/ ..-->..5d /sup 1/D/sub 2/ (lambda=1500 nm) was obtained. The deactivation of Ba (5d/sup 3/D/sub J/) by Ba (6s /sup 1/S/sub 0/) is extremely efficient proceeding with a thermal cross section of 1.3 +- 0.1 nm/sup 2/ at approx. =730 K. This is in sensible accord with recent calculations of Ba/sub 2/ potential curves.
