Computation and graphics in mathematical research: Progress report, June 1, 1987-December 31, 1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5542130
The principal investigators, D. Hoffman, W. Meeks and J. Spruck, conduct research in differential geometry, calculus of variations and applied mathematics. Increasingly, this research has taken on a computational component, while still addressing problems of current theoretical interest in these subjects. This computational side has two important aspects: implementation of algorithms to solve problems in partial differential equations (arising from physical problems) and scientific graphics. Some of the research that we have done and are currently doing is described in this report. Critical to this research is the ongoing use of advanced computing equipment and the development of new graphics algorithms and interfaces tailored to the solution of computational problems in science. We have been able to make some connections between surfaces of constant mean curvature and surface interfaces in block copolymers. 24 refs.
