Production of /sup 6/He, /sup 6/Li, /sup 7/Li, and /sup 7/Be in the. cap alpha. +. cap alpha. reaction between 60--160 MeV

Cross sections for the production of /sup 6/He, /sup 6/Li, /sup 7/Li, and /sup 7/Be produced in the ..cap alpha..+..cap alpha.. reaction have been measured over the energy range 60--160 MeV. Detailed angular distributions are presented for exit channels leading to /sup 7/Li, /sup 7/Be, and /sup 6/Le (g.s.), along with cross sections for the three-body exit channels leading to the production of /sup 6/He and /sup 6/Li. The astrophysical significance of the ..cap alpha..+..cap alpha.. reaction is discussed with particular emphasis on the production of /sup 7/Li in the interaction of galactic cosmic rays with the interstellar medium. In addition, two-nucleon-transfer distorted-wave Born approximation calculations are presented in an attempt to understand the reaction mechanism operating in the ..cap alpha..(..cap alpha..,d)/sup 6/Li (g.s.) reaction.
