Angular momentum limitation in vibrationally inelastic collisions of I/sub 2/(B /sup 3/Pi) with He and Xe

We present measurements of thermally averaged level-to-level rate constants for vibrationally and rotationally inelastic collisions of I/sub 2/(B /sup 3/Pi) with Xe and He:I*/sub 2/(v/sub x/ = 13, j/sub i/ = 41 or 91) ..-->.. I*/sub 2/(v/sub f/ = 12, j/sub f/). Comparison of these results with our previous work on the same systems for rotationally inelastic collisions with no vibrational inelasticity reveals a similarity in the collision dynamics for the vibrationally inelastic and vibrationally elastic processes.
