The number of drilling variables monitored downhole with MWD (measurement while drilling) equipment is increasing, along with better analysis of information. The analyzed product now allows operators to develop efficient and timely drilling procedures and plans. Despite these developments, however, acceptance of MWD and surface real-time well computing technologies has been slow. The relatively new technologies and equipment are sometimes difficult to interpret and maintain. In most cases, specialists are required at the drilling site. The variables now being monitored downhole with MWD equipment include: mud temperature (annular and tubing), weight on the bit, downhole torque, inclination, direction, tool face heading, temperature, short resistivity of formation, and gamma radiation. Gamma radiation is the newest variable logged downhole. The performance and economics of MWD systems are discussed.
