Study of the decay J/psi. --> gamma. eta. pi pi

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
The radiative decay J/psi..--> gamma nu pi pi.. has been studied with data taken with the crystal ball detector at the SPEAR e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring. In addition to the well-known eta', the eta..pi pi.. mass spectrum shows a broad enhancement centered at approx.1700 MeV. The authors have searched for the iota(1440) in the eta..pi pi.. mass spectrum and find R(J/psi..--> gamma..iota)(iota..-->..eta..pi pi..)/R(J/psi..--> gamma..iota)( iota..-->..KK..pi..)<0.5 (90% confidence level).
