In this paper results using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy on the influence of small additions of Zn({approximately}0.25 at%) on the nature of the grain boundary precipitates in an AA 8090 alloy are presented to show that Zn is indeed detected in enhanced concentrations in association with both {delta} (AlLi) and T{sub 2}(Al{sub 6}CuLi{sub 3}) precipitates formed at the grain boundary. An addition of 0.6 wt% of Zn to an al-2.2Li-1.2Cu-0.8Mg-0.10Zr alloy does not either change the type of the coarse grain boundary precipitates, i.e., {delta} (AlLi) and T{sub 2} (Al{sub 6}CuLi{sub 3}) or reduce the width of the precipitate free zones (PFZs) adjacent to the grain boundary, while, it does change the chemistry of both {delta} and T{sub 2} via incorporation of Zn into these phases.
