Grout is a cementous material that is used to infiltrate and seal rock fissures in earth dams. The grout then hardens to stop water flow through the rock therefore minimizing the water penetration through the dam. Grout is being used by the US Army Corps of Engineers on jobsites of earth dams all over the world. Grouting is an art that has taken many years for the Corps of Engineers to establish standards in the practice. In order to optimize the effectiveness of the grout, different methods of grouting have been established. Also with grouting there has been developments of specialized equipment to ensure the highest quality of grouting that can be produced. Research is currently underway with the properties of grout in order to make grouting more of a science instead of an art.
