Hard-to-flood sand gives up secondary oil in West Texas

Success of the Mobil-operated Twofreds (Delaware) Field Unit water injection project has enhanced secondary recovery prospects over a large part of the Delaware Basin of W. Texas. The unitized interval is composed of a uniform, fine-grained quartz sand in the productive part of the field, grading into a laminated shale and shaley sand section in nonproductive areas. Net sand thickness averages about 16 ft over the unit area. Performance of the Twofreds Unit to date indicates that this will be a successful water injection project. The pilot area has progressed to the point that a satisfactory volumetric sweep efficiency seems assured in this low water saturation area. From the widespread production response and absence of excessive water breakthrough in the higher water saturation areas after 2 yr of injection, it appears that water saturations up to 45% do not rule out secondary recovery projects in Delaware sand reservoirs. Injection well performance has been satisfactory with no evidence of abnormal injection pressures or injectivity decline. A table lists reservoir and fluid properties.
