Ecological aspects of mercury-selenium interactions in the marine environment

Journal Article · · Environ. Health Perspect.; (United States)

In the marine environment, mercury is found with selenium in all investigated species of mammals, fish, and birds. It seems that selenium will exert protective action against mercury toxicity in the marine environment. On the other hand, increased retention of mercury caused by selenium may lead to biomagnification in the food chain.
