Proceedings of the topical conference on electronuclear physics with internal targets
The Topical Conference on Electronuclear Physics with Internal Targets, sponsored by the program of Nuclear Physics at SLAC (NPAS), was held at SLAC January 9--12, 1989. This conference followed by two years a workshop on the same subject held at SLAC in January 1987. The topic of these meetings---the technology and physics opportunities with internal targets in stored beams---is a rapidly growing field of physics research stimulated by three main factors: (i) unique access to certain domains of nuclear and particle physics using ultrathin internal targets in high current stored beams. Examples are the possibility to surround the target with large acceptance detectors for coincidence detection of multi particle final states, and the ability to detect highly ionizing particles (nuclear fragments) that can escape from ultrathin targets. (ii) the existence of many storage rings, and new projects under construction, in laboratories around the world that provide a wide energy range of high current circulating beams of electrons, protons, and even anti protons that are suitable for use with internal targets. Some of these facilities are developing polarized beams which offer many exciting possibilities for physics. (iii) recent progress in the technology of ultrathin targets, especially developments which promise to produce usable targets of polarized nuclei. The purpose of this conference was to bring together people working on experimental techniques for internal targets as well as those with new ideas for physics questions to be addressed with these new tools.
