Description of nuclear structure effects in sub-barrier fusion by the interacting boson model

Nuclear structure effects are incorporated in the description of fusion reactions near the Coulomb barrier using the interacting boson model. Predictions of this model are compared with the geometrical model and with sub-barrier fusion and mean angular momentum data for the fusion of {sup 16}O with the axially symmetric nuclei {sup 154}Sm and {sup 166}Er.
