The House Government Operations Committee and the Subcommittee on Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources met on May 12, 1978 to begin a series of hearings to investigate the status of solar energy programs in the US. The first hearing, conducted in Los Angeles, examined California's programs and incentives to determine if their programs can be used as a model for the rest of the nation. A representative of the state energy commission and representatives from 4 individual cities reported on what can be accomplished at a local level. Also public representatives from public interest groups and industry presented statements. Three additional hearings, conducted in Washington, dealt with the solar energy budgets and appropriations, personnel in the solar energy agencies and other agencies making national policy, solar energy technologies, the impact solar energy is expected to make on available energy supplies, and the biases against solar energy in the market place. Many statements were presented by government officials, educators, representatives from industry, and public interest groups at the June 12, 13, and 14, 1978 hearings. (MCW)
