Study of the reaction of O(/sup 3/P) with ethylene

Absolute rate coefficients for the reaction of O(/sup 3/P) with C/sub 2/H/sub 4/(k/sub 1/) and C/sub 2/D/sub 4/(k/sub 2/) were measured over the temperature range of 298 to 940 K, using the technique of flash photolysis-resonance fluorescence. The measured bimolecular rate coefficients increase monotonically with temperature. k/sub 1/(T) is seen to exhibit a recognizable curvature in its Arrhenius plot. At 800 K, H atoms were detected as being a product of reaction (1). Kinetics and mechanistic information derived from these measurements are discussed.
