Next generation [open quote]superfans[close quote] could plug electric utility capacity gaps

The next generation of widebody transport aircraft will make good use of the new superfan jet engines like the P W 4000, GE90 and Rolls Royce Trent. In reporting on these concepts over the past few years, it is believed that these machines would also provide the basis for very attractive future aeroderivative electric generation systems (not to mention high-capacity mechanical drives). That potential helped inspire formation of the Collaborative Advanced Gas Turbine (CAGT). The program is an effort enlisting the wide ranging talents of electric and gas utilities, gas turbine vendors, research and development centers and government agencies. Collaborative effort by electric and gas utilities, gas turbine builders, R D centers and government agencies could move the next generation transport superfan engines into widespread power generation service by the year 2000.
