This review of overpressure protective devices is based on the ASME guide for gas transmission and distribution piping systems of 1980. Analysis of overpressure protection methods in the industry has been increasing since 1970 to insure that provisions of Part. 192, Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, ''Transportation of natural and other gas by pipelines: minimum federal safety standards'', are being complied with or plans are being made to comply. The basic premise for protection against accidental overpressure is explained, i.e., the maximum allowable operating pressure in a gas system could be exceeded either at a compressor station or in a pipeline downstream of a pressure control devices; overpressure protection devices must be used on all of these installations with the exception of centrifugal compresssors. Four groups of locations where overpressure protection is needed are identified: compressor stations; gas holders, pipelines, and all facilities that might at times be bottle-tight; high pressure distribution systems; and low pressure distribution systems.
