Comparison of gauge-model predictions at high Q/sup 2/: pp, p-barp, and e/sup +/e/sup -/ interactions

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., D; (United States)
We compare the predictions of the SU/sub L/(2) x U(1) and SU/sub L/(2) x SU/sub R/(2) x U(1) gauge models for various pp, p-barp, and e/sup +/e/sup -/ processes at high Q/sup 2/. First, we calculate the masses, total widths, and branching ratios for the various neutral (Z/sup 0/) gauge bosons in both models to show their parameter dependence. We then calculate their production cross sections for pp, p-barp, and e/sup +/e/sup -/ interactions. Further, we consider the forward-backward asymmetry and the polarization effects in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation for both models. We find that the best and perhaps the only way to distinguish the two models is to search for a second Z/sup 0/ boson in leptonic and hadronic reactions. The detection of such a particle may be possible with the next generation of accelerators.
