The Lipari Landfill site is located in Mantua Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey and is adjacent to the towns of Pitman and Glassboro. The site is approximately fifteen acres in size; six acres of which were used for hazardous-waste landfilling activities. Trenches excavated for sand and gravel were backfilled with municipal refuse, household wastes, liquid and semi-solid chemical wastes, and other industrial wastes. Although no detailed records were kept, it has been estimated that 12,000 cubic yards of solid wastes and 2.9 million gallons of liquid wastes were disposed of at the site. Wastes reported to have been disposed of include solvents, paint thinners, formaldehyde paints, phenol and amine wastes, dust-collector residues, resins and ester press cakes.
