The recent discovery of superconductivity at liquid nitrogen temperatures in a class of materials known as cuprate superconductors has generated a renewed interest, both scientific and practical, in the magnetic properties of type-II superconductors. Potential applications for these new materials include high-performance superconducting magnets, efficient electric transmission lines, and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) devices. The prospect of operating these devices at liquid nitrogen temperatures, instead of the more costly liquid helium temperatures, is particularly attractive from an economic perspective. However, despite large values for both the critical temperature and the upper critical magnetic field, the relatively small values for the critical temperature and the upper critical magnetic field, the relatively small values for the critical current density in cuprate superconductors have greatly limited the scope of their applications thus far.
