Work has progressed in three principal areas. These are (1) Phase transformation in SiC-AlN ceramics, (2) Phase equilibria and transformation in AlN-Al/sub 2/OC ceramics, (3) Elevated temperature creep in SiC-AlON ceramics and AlN. Principal characterization tools for the study of phase equilibria and transformation have been high resolution electron microscopy, microchemical analysis, optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction. 4 figs.
