This patent describes a completely vaneless turbine apparatus. It comprises a first low speed rotating shaft; a low pressure pump or a compressor on the first shaft; a second high speed contrarotating shaft; a high pressure pump compressor on the second shaft, and receiving fluid from the low pressure pump or compressor; a combustor producing hot gas; a first turbine reaction low speed stage receiving hot gas from the combustor and secured to the first low speed shaft; a second turbine high speed stage receiving gas from the first stage and connected to the second high speed shaft; the first turbine stage having a velocity ratio of less than 0.5; and the second turbine stage having a velocity ratio greater than 0.5.
