The effect of ion and electron drifts on the existence of arbitrary amplitude solitary waves is studied using Sagdeev{close_quote}s pseudopotential method. It is found that if the electron drift velocity u{sub 0} is finite, solitary waves may exist for relatively large values of v{sub 0}/c, where v{sub 0} is the ion drift velocity and c is the velocity of light. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
