Stresses in ring stiffened tubular Y joints under axial and inplane moment loadings

Conference · · Am. Soc. Mech. Eng., (Pap.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5529867
Stresses in the internally ring stiffened tubular Y joints of a conventional jacket type offshore steel structure are examined under both axial and inplane moment loadings of the branch. Ring stiffeners of uniform rectangular cross section are provided in the vicinity of intersection and inside the chord. Numerical analysis of a typical 45/sup 0/-Y joint is carried out employing finite element approach. Stresses in Y joints are compared with those of corresponding equivalent T joints. Analytical results proved excellent structural efficiency as well as economy of ring stiffening for tubular joints.
