A Finnigan Model 4023 gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC/MS) was optimized to measure low parts-per-trillion levels of CS/sub 2/ using an isotopic dilution technique and preconcentration on Carbosieve B adsorber. The breakthrough volume, desorption efficiency, and decay rate of CS/sub 2/ test atmospheres sampled by Carbosieve B packed traps were determined. A calibration curve of GC/MS response as a function of CS/sub 2/(80) concentration in the low pptv range showed a precision of 1% and an accuracy of 5%. The method was developed for field deployment on aircraft platforms by efficiently sealing sample traps and removing contamination degassing from sampler and tube components and leaks in the sampler system during sampling. Using the NASA Electra aircraft, free tropospheric CS/sub 2/ was sampled on packed traps over a 92/sup 0/ latitude range. Samples were analyzed by GC/MS. The mean and standard deviation of 43 CS/sub 2/ data were 5.5 +/- 1.9 pptv. A lower limit of detection of 0.04 pmoles of CS/sub 2/ was achieved.
