Reaction of Gibbs reagent with para-substituted phenols

The reaction of Gibbs reagent (2,6-dichloro-p-benzoquinone 4-chloroimine) with a number of para-substituted phenols is investigated. The reaction adds the reagent at the para position of the phenol ring to yield an indophenol. The absorbance intensity of the indophenol at 602 nm, the wavelength of maximum absorbance, is used to determine the indophenol yield.
