This paper describes the results of the first phase of a three phase program to develop manufacturing technologies that will enable sales of the PVI Powergrid at very competitive prices. Key to this goal is low-cost manufacturing along with high output. The program focuses on development of a state-of-the-art Fresnel lens and module side extrusion system, development of a second generation automated receiver assembly station, development of low-cost, roll-formed panel frame members, and significant reduction of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions during module assembly. The first phase has been successfully completed with design, specification, and initiation of fabrication of the various pieces of machinery. A new die for a 20 inch wide Fresnel lens was also developed. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
