Increasing short circuit levels and demand for shorter fault clearing times have given impetus to the use of bus-zone protection schemes at all voltage levels (MV, HV, EHV). Using microprocessor-based digital technology to achieve better performance with line relays is internationally accepted, and almost all relay manufactures offer products ranging from the simple overcurrent relay to the more complex distance relay. However, numerical bus-zone schemes have not been a subject of interest to researchers, since they do not offer challenging opportunities to universities in terms of new measuring algorithms. As such, literature on this topic is scarce. This article addresses design considerations and operating experience with microprocessor-based bus-zone protection schemes.
