Journal Article · · Sol. Eng. Mag.; (United States)

Developments in the technology of solar cooling systems are discussed and several installations are cited. In 1977, solar cooling had about 0.02% of the total solar market while in 1978, this percentage dropped to 0.018%. Absorption chillers are primarily used for solar cooling and Rankine engines are being evaluated for future use. Rankine engines have been used in conjunction with electric air conditioners heat pumps, and solar collectors. A 25-ton Rankine cycle engine utilizing 252 flat plate collectors provides 40% of the cooling for a 12 unit Kansas apartment building. Its design and operation are discussed. Another system that has been developed utilizes a Rankine engine to drive an air conditioning compressor. The system utilizes temperatures of 300/sup 0/F and can be used with conventional solar collectors.
