This article presents a brief overview of the nations rural electric system. Today it can be characterized as very diverse in the character of the market served, and in general it is under financial and philosophical pressure. Some rural cooperatives are in good condition, with economic bases which are growing. In most cases this growth is not the result of properous farming, but the influx of urban expansion. For cooperatives in the vast midwest, and in other remote ranching and farming sections of the country, the systems are as often facing loss as gain. The rural system is very large, in its physical extent, and in the extent of its distribution systems. However it does not have a growing economic base in general to allow for steady improvement and timely maintenance of this system, and this is placing these systems often in great financial stress.
