How Marathon controls its 4,200-mile network

This article examines the SAGE pipeline SCADA system which provides centralized control and expansion capabilities for the crude and products system. All pipeline operations require timely acquisition of valve status pumping unit and alarm status, tank levels, production temperature, pressure and gravity as well as meter volumes. The SAGE pipeline SCADA System gives the Operations Center the vital data and the control it requires to manage one million-plus bbl/day pipeline capacity. Forty-one communication circuits, transporting data to and from over 100 stations, provide instantaneous indication of thousands of status', analogs and tank levels as well as fingertip control of more than 700 valves and pumping units. Operators now typically handle 100 batches/day from the Operations Center, making operation of the 4,200 miles of pipeline more efficient and providing additional data integrity and pipeline security.
