The purpose of this program is to produce isotopes from the neptunium decay series for medical research and potential clinical applications. Members of the neptunium series may be well suited for medical applications because of their relatively high energy emissions from alpha decays. We describe the separation of {sup 229}Th from two different sources. In the first case, thorium ({sup 229}Th mixed with natural thorium) was the most abundant species of a residual from prior {sup 233}U processing. In the second case, milligram quantities of {sup 229}Th are separated from kilogram quantities of uranium. We describe the performance of Reillex HPQ anion-exchange resin for separating thorium in these two situations.
