Explosively produced fracture of oil shale. Progress report, January-March 1983

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5526673
The Los Alamos National Laboratory is conducting rock fragmentation research in oil shale to develop the blasting and fluid-flow technologies required to prepare a rubble bed for a modified in situ retort. The first section of this report details progress on our joint rock fragmentation project with Sandia National Laboratories, including selection of an explosive for the experiments. We describe a study of the relationship between the speed of sound in the oil shale and the detonation velocity of the explosive. We also discuss the preshot fracture distribution calculations and experimental results predictions for the upcoming single-borehole tests at Anvil Points. Section I also lists the publications and presentations from our rock fragmentation research (July 1980 through the present). The second section summarizes the geologic influences on the Consortium fragmentation experiments at Anvil Points Mine.
