Wetting of solid metals and alloys by liquid metal has an important role on phenomena such as heat transfer, electrical contact resistance, and corrosion that which take place at the interface between solid and liquid metals. The problem of wetting becomes real in connection with the use of liquid metal as a coolant, for example, in a liquid-metal target for neutron sources. Another example of using liquid metal is a technical problem of developing a high-power switch device, in which wetting of tungsten electrodes by mercury is rather essential. Experiments to enhance the wetting of stainless steel by mercury have been carried out.
