Photochemical generation of the optoacoustic effect. Progress report, 15 April 1981-14 April 1982

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5526170
Research during this reporting period has been directed toward obtaining a new mathematical solution to the Riccati equation that describes the optoacoustic effect in a photodissociated gas, and to initiating experiments to observe this effect. A solution to the nonlinear rate equation has been obtained that includes the effects of saturation of the population of the initial gas concentration. Expressions are obtained for the amplitude and phase of the optoacoustic signal that show qualitatively different behavior depending upon the value of the saturation parameter. These results point up a new direction for the experimental investigation currently underway. Experiments have been conducted to evaluate microphones and high pressure acoustic cells for phase lag measurements in a periodically photodissociated gas.
