The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) units 2 and 3 is a 3410-MW(thermal) dual-unit Combustion Engineering (CE) pressurized water reactor (PWR). Each of the units` four reactor coolant loops utilizes two vertical U-tube recirculating steam generators (SGs) to transfer heat to a secondary steam plant. The SONGS Steam Generator Strategic Plan was developed to optimize the operation, maintenance, and working life of the SGs. The plan called for SG chemical cleaning (SGCC) during the units` respective cycle-10 refueling outages. Free-span SG tube cracking at other CE PWRs in 1995 and 1996, resulted in the decision to accelerate the SGCC to the cycle-9 refueling outages.
