Since the early 1970s, Westinghouse Electric Corporation has been engaged in the development of a pressurized, fluidized-bed gasification process at its Waltz Mill process development unit (PDU) near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The PDU has been in operation since 1975 and its technical feasibility has been successfully verified in more than 8,000 hours of hot operation. A wide variety of coals and chars has been tested at capacities ranging from 15 tons per day with air to 35 tons per day with oxygen and air. This paper discusses the results of selected oxygen-blown PDU tests conducted during 1980 and 1981 using various bituminous feedstocks. Process performance data from PDU operations are presented, particularly data concerning recycle of fines and part-load performance of the gasifier. The operational flexibility and reliability of the gasifier, as well as environmental considerations for gasifier effluent disposal, are also discussed.
