Don't wear blinders when choosing a hazardous waste carrier

When choosing a hazardous waste carrier, it may not hurt to be a little paranoid. Start by subjecting a potential hauler to a barrage of questions. And, say people experienced in the selection process, don't be shy about demanding the hauler support its answers with documentation. Then verify information with third-party sources such as state regulators or insurance companies. Never, ever, take anything for granted. Your company's future is as stake. Regulations have appeared in the last two decades to help avoid bad experiences. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) created a manifest system to ensure hazardous waste gets to where it is supposed to be going, and the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA), with amendments, set Department of Transportation (DOT) standards for carriers and shippers (usually the generators) of hazardous materials and wastes.
