Systems for dewatering unconventional gas wells

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)

This paper summarizes the current status of research directed at improving the techniques and equipment for dewatering coalbed (methane) gas wells. The research by TRW Energy Engineering Division is performed under Contract to the Gas Research Institute (GRI). A description of dewatering well histories, a brief discussion of hydrogeotechnic aspects of the coal formation, pump system design criteria, an array of candidate state-of-the-art systems, and a cost parameter comparison are provided. While the research project will not be completed until the latter part of this year, preliminary conclusions indicate that current oil and gas field pumping equipment can be used, when properly employed, to dewater these unconventional gas wells.
