INAA based on the {sup 64}Cu 511-keV line
- Institute fuer Radiochemie der TUM, Garching (Germany)
Applying the {sup 64}Cu 51 1 -keV line in instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) for copper determination is impaired by the fact that this line is not specific. For INAA of biological and environmental samples, more than 20 radioactive nuclides give rise to the 511-keV line. This line is also always observed in the ambient background. In practice, radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) is usually employed to determine copper. This is sensitive and specific but time-consuming. Gamma-gamma coincidence spectroscopy can be used to avoid radiochemical separation but then only copper can be determined. This work seeks to establish an INAA procedure based on a normal gamma-ray spectrometer and employing the {sup 64}Cu 511-keV line.
